Is "In Blue" Lyrically
Sincere?
Instead of reviewing all the songs, I'll just do
those that left a deeper impression on me.
Somebody For Someone - It's Queen of Hollywood
part 2 - "Selling sugar for money in the dead of the night".
It's a sad kind of song with a beautiful message that there is someone
out there everyone one, no matter how sad and pathetic you think
your life is. And this special someone will make your world a much
better place - " 'Look at me -sees me' 'Look at me - save me'…/
Somebody is gonna make it right"
All The Love In The World - A beautiful ballad about looking
for that someone special and cherishing true love - "Love's for
a lifetime, not for a moment, so how can I throw it away". The
introduction sounds very much like something from Boyzone. And if
you listen carefully, they used the tin whistle or some flutes like
instrument beautifully.
What catches my attention is - "I got more than
a girl could wish for / I live my dreams but it's not all they say
/ Still I believe I'm missing something real/ I need someone who
really sees me", such appropriate lines to be sang by Andrea.
It's almost like she singing about herself. Yes she fulfilled her
dreams of making music but she's looking for the right person and
yet she's afraid that the person only sees and likes her as Andrea
from The Corrs and not who she really is.
Radio, At Your Side - It has been given a
little remix, making it more up-tempo. I actually prefer the Unplugged
version, especially for At Your Side. The Unplugged version sounds
for sincere, without having too much drumming at the back to distract
you.
One Night - Another ballad, but I don't particularly
like this song. Rhythm wise, it is quite a nice and soothing song
but the when I interpreted the lyrics, I think it is talking about
one night stand -"So for one night - is it alright / That I give
you / My heart - my love - my heart / Just for one night / My body
- my soul"
I remembered Andrea said this before "To me, love-making
is too sacred to be flippant about…", which is probably why the
song sounds unconvincing to me. But then again the song is for the
movie "Mad About Mambo", so what can I say.
All In A Day - Ok can someone explain to
me what this song is trying to say? My interpretation is that one
day she suddenly realized that she is lost the human race and she
is in misery. She don't know why, how or what she has been doing.
She's not following her dreams or her heart, just being swept away
by the waves.
And now she's trying to break free - "Just let
me flow - just let me drift on by"
But I do like the violin playing somewhere in the
middle of the song.
Is that how you interpreted it too?
No More Cry - At first I'm surprise by the
pace of the song. One would expected it to be to be a slow and sad
ballad, like Pearl Jam's Last Kiss, because it was written for their
father, Gerry, after their mum, Jean, passed away.
But I guess Irish are eternal optimist - "One
day soon we'll meet again". It's refreshing to hear song like
that sing at a up-tempo pace, as well as for The Corrs to write
and sing about kinship other than their usual love song.
Rain - Love the violin and the piano on this
ballad, it actually sounds jazzy with tints of R & B to me. Written
by Sharon, I think she should sing it during her wedding day, because
she said "The lyrics are about a moment of clarity brought about
by meeting the love of your life." That must be how she felt when
she met her fiancé.
Give It All Up - Sounds like something out
of Ray Of Light, and interesting choice of trumpet as part of the
sound. Interesting lyrics too. This is one of the songs that I think
they are talking about themselves - "The stage lights they shine
so brightly / But still I get no peace / And I'm a long long way
from you"
Isn't it so true that while they are so famous on
the stage, they are so far away from their love ones?
And maybe that's what they will all do when they
finally meet the Ms Right or Mr Right - "Give it all up just
for you", they did say that nothing matters more than being
happy, especially true for the girls I think.
Hurt Before - Love this song. The way it
was written and sang reminds me of songs from Evita.
It's an autobiography of Andrea's. And I think it's
such a sad song - "Loves her mum and her dad, the only secure
that she knows", just from this line, we can tell how heart
broken she was and how frighten she is of ever having her heart
broken again.
There's lots of great lines from this song such
as "There's a pain in her heart, she's trying so hard to unwind
/ Makes her cry in the night, when visions so real make her blind"
and "Turning the key, unlocking the door / Embracing the roller
coaster world / Take it in stride, you're just twenty-five" etc.
I guessed that if you know Andrea is the romantic
kind and that she searching for her true love, this song will leave
a much deeper impression on you. After the song ends, I really empathize
with her. There are so many contradictions in her life. She's trying
the look for her true love yet she's afraid of getting her heart
broken and being an artist is not making things easier. No doubt
she gets to meet lots of eligible bachelors but she will be skeptical
of them too, afraid that they fell in love with her image and not
the real her. And what is she gonna do if she finds her true love,
will the relationship last if they spend too much time apart because
of the nature of her job?
Rebel Heart - This will be my favorite instrumental
piece from The Corrs for now. It was a flawless combination of the
violin and tin whistle. At the start of the piece, the violin conveyed
sadness of any possible tragedies you can think of and slowly the
pace picked up, and whistle came in. You begin to feel a sense of
optimism and you wonder to yourself, why are the Irish always so
optimistic about any and every things.
In conclusion.... these
are just my personal views. It may or may not be what The Corrs
are trying to convey but two fact remains, lyrically "In Blue" is
that most sincere album till date and overall, good effort on experimenting
with new sounds, but I do wished that they had used the violin,
tin whistle and bodhran more often and keep more of that Celtic
sounds.
